2. Genuine Rolex Daytona 116500LN vs 126500LN Baseline

Rolex introduced the steel 116500LN in 2016 and replaced it with the 126500LN during the Daytona’s 60th-anniversary update in 2023. Both genuine references retain a nominal 40 mm Oyster case, 100 m water-resistance rating, sapphire crystal, screw-down Triplock crown, screw-down pushers, Oyster bracelet, Oysterlock clasp and approximately 5 mm Easylink comfort extension.

The 2023 update changed details that become obvious only side by side. Rolex states that the case and dial were redesigned, and that Cerachrom-bezel versions gained a thin edge in the same metal as the middle case. The official launch also introduced calibre 4131, an evolution of calibre 4130 with a Chronergy escapement, optimized rotor bearing, Paraflex shock absorbers, revised decoration, column wheel, vertical clutch and an approximately 72-hour genuine power reserve.

Independent hands-on coverage measured the genuine 126500LN at about 11.9 mm thick and described it as roughly half a millimetre thinner than the outgoing steel Daytona, while noting its more symmetrical lugs. Those values are useful reference targets. They are not measurements of the watches in these photographs.

Do not transfer genuine specifications to a replica. Rolex’s 100 m water resistance, Superlative Chronometer certification, -2/+2 seconds-per-day standard and 72-hour reserve apply to genuine watches. A VSF unit needs its own timing, reserve and pressure evidence.

In QC, inspect the steel border at 60, 120 and 240 on the tachymeter scale. Its width should look consistent, the ceramic should sit concentrically, and the printed or filled scale should not drift toward one side. Protective film, glare and an off-axis camera can create a false uneven rim, so request a second angle before rejecting the unit.

Sub-dial rings, hour markers and the 6 o’clock signature

The 126500LN uses slimmer counter rings and longer, narrower applied hour markers. The 116500LN uses thicker black rings and broader markers. The newer layout leaves more white space between the counters and markers, so the face can look larger even though both genuine references remain nominally 40 mm.

At 6 o’clock, the newer generation includes a small coronet between the words SWISS and MADE. The older dial uses the earlier signature. For either generation, judge each counter independently. Check that the concentric texture is clean, numerals follow the ring, hands sit centrally on their pinions and all three chronograph hands reset to their printed zero points. A visually good dial can still fail functional reset QC.

The 116500LN profile is known for softer curves and asymmetric lug treatment. The 126500LN redesign looks straighter and more balanced across the lugs. In the photographed pair, the newer case also presents a more layered transition from steel case to metal bezel edge to black ceramic.

A macro side view should show a clean sweep through the case flank, even brushing on the upper lug surface and a controlled polished chamfer or edge. Look for waviness in the mirror finish, one lug that appears longer, excessive gap at the end-link, or a bezel that sits visibly tilted relative to the crystal.

Still photos cannot prove thread quality. Request one continuous video showing each pusher cap unscrewed and re-seated without cross-threading, followed by chronograph start, stop and reset. The crown should wind and set without grinding, and it should screw down straight rather than catching at an angle.

The photograph can compare engraving depth, spacing, polished surfaces and hinge construction. It cannot establish a reference or factory from the code alone. Batch marks can change, and the upper and lower clasps are not labeled with the watch head they came from in this frame. Use the code only as one part of a consistent QC set.

Open and close the exact clasp several times on video. The Oysterlock-style safety should engage positively, the folding blades should not scrape each other, and the Easylink-style extension should fold and lock without lateral play. Inspect screw heads and removable links for tool damage before sizing.
